Sunday's are the day I take off my Good Gym shirt and help out my community at Akwaaba Hackney, and a little thing like a lock-down isn't going to stop me doing that!
First on the agenda today was to gather as many books as I could carry for our self-isolating teenagers. Being a fan of YA I had stacks of recommendations to pass onto Naomi whose dropping them off to families.
When I arrived at our temporary space at St Paul's Church I began creating labels for the various food deliveries we were arranging for today. Maybe of our members are vulnerable and without access to food so it's vital to arrange for packages to be delivered. With donations running low we were worried we didn't have enough food but then we were showered with donations from a local mutual aid group and Polish community. Soon we had more then enough food, including carefully packaged meals with hand-written Easter messages!
Food packages set aside I moved into the main room to help the kitchen team bag up hot food and snacks for the local street homeless. We have built a efficient system and soon over 100 hot meals were packed up and passed on to the outside team.
With everyone fed, I had a quick bite of leftover rice and salad before helping out on a delivery. Thanks to all the donations our cyclist couldn't carry everything for her drop offs. So myself and another walker who lived nearby shared the load delivering provisions to a single mum who is currently self-isolating.
If you'd like to support the work we're doing at Akwaaba were currently rising funds to cover the cost of our Sunday food bank: https://www.givey.com/akwaabac19emergencyfund
