Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Samantha Belfrage
7 GoodGym runners took on the new role of recycling monitors during todays Great South Run. The event had a 90's theme to celebrate 30 years of the Great South Run. Even though the event has run for three decades in Portsmouth this is the first year that a team of volunteers have taken on the role to try and save as many plastic bottles from the incinerator. Instead we fed the plastic bottles to Nellie and Nelson the fishes so that they can be recycled.
You might have heard that 90's legends Timmy Mallet and Jet from Gladiators were sending the 20,000 runners off on their merry way to complete 10 miles around sunny Portsmouth. The atmosphere was electric and all volunteers had a brilliant time. As usual GoodGym were setting a trend as we were the only volunteers rocking green high-vis jackets (the rest were in blue). Some of us even wore our backpacks under our high-vis to make sure everyone could see we were happy to recycle.
In true GoodGym style we couldn't ignore the litter we saw so we had extra bags to collect other rubbish too. Whilst hunting high and low for plastic bottles a mermaids purse (shark egg) was found - check it out in the photos.
Well done to ALL runners and volunteers, let's do it again next year!
