Report written by Sally Jones
Victoria and Sally helped out with the FareShare Food collection in the Hammersmith Tesco.
FareShare take donations of long life food items from customers and fresh food from supermarkets and redistribute the food to local charities. These charities, such as children's breakfast clubs, homeless shelters and refuges, can then provide meals to those who need them. Tesco also donate 20% of the financial cost of donated items to FareShare.
After finding the food donation box hidden behind some salads, Victoria and Sally set about perfecting their spiel to encourage the lovely people of Hammersmith to add a few extra items to their shopping basket. It was a slow start, but the donations started rolling in thick and fast after that! Helped along by the reduced salads, which were positioned next to the donation box, we shared the story and incentive behind FareShare's winter drive with customers and offered them shopping lists of items they could add to their basket. We even got a late evening donation of 10kg of Chapatti flour!
After filling the donation box, we transferred many items into large banana boxes, ready to be donated to FareShare. It was a successful evening and no doubt many families will benefit from the generosity of the people of Hammersmith.
A good deed well done :)
