After a night of heavy rain and forecasted thunderstorms for the morning, it was uncertain how many people would brave the weather for our Community Mission. Luckily and surprisingly, the rain had stopped just in time for parkrun! 8 runners met bright and early at Bexley parkrun ready for their morning run/volunteer. Nick was volunteering as barcode scanner ahead of the 10k run tomorrow.
After parkrun, we made our way up to the Old English Garden. We met Nikki who gave us all teas and coffees and biscuits. After we had refuelled it was time to start work on the task. We chose our weapons - gloves, spades, forks, buckets... and headed off to the area which needed weeding. There were lots of small weeds to begin with and as we moved along the garden border there became more and more bindweed which had taken over!
Despite the threat of thunderstorms, the rain held off and it was actually quite warm!
We chatted about parkrun, wondering if anyone had run a PB. Matt had run his 98th parkrun this morning, so we were planning and discussing how we are going to be celebrating his 100th run in a few weeks. After nearly 2 hours weeding away, we had filled 5 gardening buckets full of weeds. We tidied and packed away our tools before making the way to the car. We must have timed this perfectly because as we set off, the heavens opened and the rain poured down! It was lucky that we managed the whole parkrun and mission without a spot of rain!
Great work Bexley! Until next time!
