Finsbury Park Run & Mission at KORI
GoodGymmers from far and wide ascended on Finsbury Park to take on the 5K Park Run. With some quick times and laughs a plenty - breakfast was had - before a group of those attending the park run headed down to KORI for a Saturday mission.
On a blustery Saturday morning a bunch of six GoodGymmers met up at KORI, Milton Rd. Community Centre, to continue the restoration of the playground. We focussed on removing the old coats of peeling paint from the metal fence railings surrounding the play area. Railing against the wind, we laid down a dust sheet in a (somewhat futile) attempt to catch all the flakes of paint that fell as we scraped it off. Weighing down the sheet with a metal bar and a couple of rocks, we got it to stay in place against the high winds. Then, armed with a variety of chisels, we set about scraping off the layers of old paint, which broke up into lots of tiny little flaky pieces and blew about all over the place in the wind, landing everywhere but the dust sheet. The fence looked like it had been repainted several times already as we scraped through at least three separate coats of paint, so considerations of simply sanding down the fence and repainting it again were ruled out when we realised that another coat of paint would soon begin to peel and flake off. If a jobs worth doing, & all that... So, we railed on, scraping away down to base metal. With good conversation flowing and some good tunes playing, we managed to clean up a good sized section of the railings in the end, ready for repainting. (There was talk of painting the railings 'GoodGym Red', a look which suits all community projects.) Our 'good-deed-mathematics' worked out that in approximately 2 & 1/2 hours, each GoodGymmer scraped an average of three poles each, totalling a 15-pole section of fence ready for a fresh lick of paint. Sums done, we put away the tools, swept up the flakes of paint from the floor, and ran off our separate ways into the rest of the weekend. Well done everyone; we'll beat this flaky fence soon enough!
