Report written by Amy L GoodGym (she/her)
I joined Sheila at Braywick Heath Nursery this morning, to help them in their annual task to plant tens of thousands of seedlings into larger trays. We joined volunteers Clive, Roger and Chrissy and nursery manager Ben. We blitzed through tray after tray, chatting and generally enjoying feeling productive.
The first batch we worked on was coleus, which will grow into a shrub with pretty coloured leaves. We then moved onto hundreds of petunias - a variety named 'Frenzy Patriotic Mix', which seemed fitting considering the upcoming Coronation and all the patriotism and frenzy that goes with it.
I'm not sure of the exact number, but by the end we must have collectively planted at least 1,800 seedlings. You might not believe it, but seedling is believing! Each tray of 6 should sell for £3.99 or 3 for £10, meaning our efforts could help the charity bring in a whopping £6000 to £7000 in sales.
PS Did you spot the penguin peeping out in one of the photos?
We run a not-for-profit company, supported by paid staff & community volunteers to provide volunteering, work experience and employment for adults with a wide range of support needs. We are currently having a big clear out across our site, and need help moving all of the material to a skip. This will enable us to better use the space we have to expand our operations and better support our volunteers and staff.

Oops I just realised I calculated the sales per plant rather than per tray. The number should be closer to £1000. Still impressive though!
