Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner
An amazing 6 Goodgymmers answered the call to help out at the Boyn Grove Community Allotment on a beautiful evening. We had been given a comprehensive list of tasks by taskowner Sue. Jess set to work, getting the hose out of the shed, connecting it up, and started filling up the water butts. , Rachel and Roberta tackled the strawberry bed, freeing the plants from the covering of weeds while Jack and Lisa gave all the raised beds and containers a good soaking of water with the watering cans. Sheila and Jess weeded around the raspberries, and while Sheila went to stake the tomatoes, Jess took on a sewing task. Yes, sewing, not sowing! The netting around one of the raised beds needed mending and an extra piece of netting added in to fill a big gap. Jess set to, using a safety pin as a needle, and some cotton thread. What a fantastic seamstress! There's still some to finish off next time, but Jess made a great start. It was great to see Roberta and Lisa again, and to talk to Cllr Jack who has a role championing Volunteering on the new council, getting some first-hand experience with Goodgym for the second time this week. Great work, team!
The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
