Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Beth Sawyer
It was a cold and misty November morning, but the goodgymers were not deterred and set off eagerly to help out with a community mission in Russell Square Gardens. The goal was to plant bulbs that will flower in the spring and cheer up the park.
First we had to sort the bulbs into batches of 100 fairly mixed up flowers (tulips, crocuses, daffodils etc). Then a couple of runners got to work digging holes to plant them quite densely into a patch of grass near the south east corner of the square.
Planting bulbs is one thing, but it seems an equal challenge is keeping the squirrels off them. To give the bulbs a fighting chance of surviving squirrel looting, we covered the area in mesh. However, since this presents a trip hazard for people and animals in the park, we built a fence around the area too.
Fence building was tough work. We laid out the wire, put down stakes at 2m intervals, stapled the wire to the stakes and then... Rebecca’s moment of glory came as she took charge of ramming the stakes into the ground. With the fence up, we stapled the top of the wire to the stakes too. It was really impressive to see what so many goodgymers achieved in just 2.5 hours - well done everyone! Looking forward to enjoying the results in the spring!
