Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
It's been many many weeks even over a month that Nathan and Sam last came to Thorlands Gardens.
It was great to catch up with Simon and see Thorlands thriving with plants and unfortunately, weeds too. Yet, this will be tackled on Wednesday. The focus for today was to build and fill the bed that Jo had strip with Simon last week.
Simon gave instructions on how to measure and saw bits of wood from the pallets he collected to fill in the gaps of the bed. However, Nathan and Sam had to make their lives more difficult. Sam didn't measured properly so extra sawing had to be done. Nathan had some issues with drilling and screwing in the nails. Yet, what tip it for Simon was us accidentally stepping on precious plants that were growing in the existing beds.
Still within the hour and a half, we had built a sturdy raised bed and filled it with roots that had been left in the tonne bags for almost a year as carbon capture then we put a layer of woodchip for five bags of topsoil. This will be the new home of a tropical banana tree that can grow 8 feet tall.
We are back on Wednesday to weed, build the second bed and possibly fill it too.
