Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Matt Nash
79 days since my last good deed feels like a berry long time, so imagine how hap-pea I was to get a 12-4 shift at City Harvest! They do great work distributing food to those who need it and at their warehouse its the job of the volunteers to sort the food. Following a temperature check at the door, I put some gloves and high-vis on and met the shift manager who put me to work sorting cucumbers between 'good' and 'squidgy'. Fortunately doing this with two other people meant that it wasn't too cu-cumbersome and after disposing of the pesky squidgy items we then apri-got going on to our next food sorting... Apricots. As we got towards the bottom of the pallet, shift manager asked it I could move on to a stack of ready made lasagnes that had arrived from Wimbledon tennis club (they looked ace BTW). I made quick work of this and was finished in 15 minutes (more or las). Next up...blueberries. We attempted various different methods of trying to separate the yucky ones (that were going off) from the good ones, but everywhere we look there was fuzz on them, proving sometimes that you can't teach mold dogs new tricks. The last thing I did was sorting various baked goods into containers by best before date. Time flew by and I was bready to go home. Having run 5k in the morning, I thought I'd take the quickest froute home...
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
