Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Six GoodGymers made light (?!) work of preparing flowerbeds in The Rookery Community Garden
We started in the warm of Urban Reef and met Pauline who was joining us for the first time - BIG WELCOME!
We headed off on a familiar 4km route, same as last week in fact, so we were sure which roads to stick on to make it a safe dash through the dark.
We arrived at the gardens and headed to ‘Mary’s Shed’ - something of a local legend in the Rookery Gardens, she and other local volunteers have been keeping the park tidy, flowers planted & vegetable gardens growing as well as keeping guard of all of the necessary tools. We grabbed these and got our torches going so we could see the lovely raised bedded areas, wild flowers beds and herb garden.
Our task was to help get a flower bed prepared for planting bulbs over the coming months whilst going ahead a planting a few of the more hardy variety. We got stuck in, raking and forking, leaving the soil nice & loose for planting.
GG Friend Peter pitched up on with Luca to lend a hand. AND low and behold between the boys, the huge slab of concrete nestled into the bed was finally extracted....The other community volunteers will be so pleased about this as they have been trying to dig it up for weeks!
Holes all dug, bulbs planted and weeds cleared we returned the tools to ‘Mary’s Shed’ and headed back to Boscombe Pier. I’m really looking forward to updating the other volunteer gardeners and working here again in the future as there is certainly loads that GoodGym can lend a hand to, from digging new flowerbeds and planting bulbs & trees, to a general tidy round & litter pick - so hopefully GG Bournemouth will be back there soon!
