SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sean Coxhead
10 Goodgymmers met with Win and Shirley from Friends Of New Walk to tackle probably our muckiest mission yet!
The old pikeing well next to the River Ouse floods regularly so our task today was to dive in, swim to the bottom and pull the plug... no one fancied that so wise Egg had some of us grab spades and buckets to be filled and the others running to the river bank to empty them again. We were soon getting stuck in filling them almost faster than they could be emptied amidst bets of who would be the first to fall in!
The area around the well was cleared of... who knows what... in no time at all with passing tourists looking in clearly "well" impressed with our work. With the surrounding done the group set about scooping water, mud, slop and random items of clothing out of the well.
Mysterious black balls started appearing in numbers, bird eggs possibly or fossilized conkers being another theory they remain a mystery - answers on a postcard!
Draining a few feet of water we started to uncover some steps. It turns out they lead to a passage way under our feet leading towards the river!
Resisting temptation to explore however, possibly due to lack of breathing apparatus, we declared this mission an epic success and Win and Shirley were obviously over"well"med with how much was cleared.
Even better all the lifting, digging and running to the river made this... wait for it... "A Well GoodGym!"
