Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Tara Shanahan
‘Should we, shouldn’t we, don’t want to run if its not safe, don’t want to seem like a soft southern snowflake by cancelling’ was my thought process for most of this morning as Brighton was carpeted in snow, but actually most of the snowfall was soft and southern and had all but melted by the afternoon!
So run we did even though our task was cancelled we had a great night out ‘plogging’! But first the intro speech where we congratulated Michael for completing his first half marathon on Sunday in 1hr 58min. Awesome!! And also worth a mention was Helena who ran at the National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill on Saturday and finished 300 and something which is pretty impressive as its the top 30% of a very competitive field. Whilst chatting on the run we discovered that Roy had also achieved a parkrun PB of 23.01 at the weekend as well as a 10K PB in training.
We headed out along the seafront to the Hove/Brighton border to ‘plog’ in the streets that lead off the seafront. Although we didn’t all have a bag, it didn’t take us long to find discarded bags as well as loads of coffee cups, fag packets, drinks cans and more plastic bags. All of this plastic is just a stone’s throw from the sea so could easily be blown into the sea and add to the horrendous plastic pollution of our marine environments.
If you would like to avoid plastic packaging in your food shopping then I really recommend you get down to the Open Market off London Road. Not only is there a super cheap greengrocers using very little plastic, you can also buy loose grains, pulses, nuts, dried fruit, seeds etc. from the Foodshed Co-op.
But back to our evening run and after about 30 minutes of ‘plogging’ we headed to the playground on the seafront for our fitness session. This was one I’d tested in the comfort of my own home earlier in the day and can confirm that it was pretty tough with some radical new moves such as Gorilla burpees and sprawl frog kicks. Check out the you tube clip I pinched it from here if you feel you would like another go!
See you next week, only 3 more dark runs left before we will back to light (maybe even warm?) evenings! Can’t wait!
