Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
Rebecca and I met Joy from Beautiful Brandon and Rose from Urban Growing / Denmark Hill Garden as they were briefing two other volunteers from the estate about what was the best technique to plant the bulbs.
We decided to dig up a trench in the middle and work our way out rather than digging, planting and covering ups. However, we soon realised we weren't working in a line and some of the areas were deeper than others. We took stock of how we wanted to plant the bulbs and came up with the conclusion that there would be two rows. Some amendments were made to the trench in term of space and depth. However, once we started to plant the bulbs there were more bulbs than space, so what started out as two rows of bulbs ended up being 5-6 rows of bulbs. The more the merrier as some of these bulbs won't spring. Joy added the final touches with a sprinkling of chilli flakes to deter the squirrels from digging up the bulbs.
We wish Joy and Beautiful Brandon all the best and hope the bulbs spring into life and bring joy to all those who pass the garden.
The project is a newly-formed group of local residents who seek to maintain and plant up areas around the estate with edible and ornamental plants. The aim is to encourage more and more local tenants/residents to get involved in gardening to benefit both themselves and the local community.
