SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Madhan
I had planned to go to City Harvest yesterday but canceled at the last minute as I saw an urgent mission listed in Hounslow and went there instead. But the Hounslow mission was also canceled after reaching the destination as I couldn't get inside the house.
Today I had to take off half a day at work because of personal commitments. It was over by 3 pm. So I signed up for the 4 pm-6 pm slot and went straight to Acton.
I met Marvin, whom I also met yesterday at the Ealing Soup kitchen as he is the regular volunteer driver who drops the delivery from City Harvest.
Today's task was to separate water bottles and drinks and arrange them in separate crates. We had quite a lot of water bottles and they come in all shapes and sizes varying between 200ml to 10L packs. On the drinks side, it's Diet Coke and Pepsi Max. There were a few Sprite Zero as well. Some of the cans imploded due to pressure and we had to throw them away.
After finishing that I still had 15 more minutes remaining in my shift. So I joined Martin, another volunteer at City Harvest in making mixed crates of vegetables. There were some fruits that needs crating as well.
On the vegetable side, we had Squash, Potatoes, red chili, Courgettes, Halapenos, beans, and lemons. Cherries and oranges made up the fruits section.
The squash belongs to the fruits section as they are from the NightShade family - Martin
But we put them in vegetable crates anyways. As my shift ended I had my dinner in the kitchen and got myself a flower to put in my house. Then I walked my way to Cultivate London for the GoodGym Ealing group run.
City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way, by distributing to organisations that feed the hungry.
