Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sheffield runner
Goodgymers arrived from all corners for a sunny morning with Sustrans, picking up litter, cutting back vegetation and stopping the creep of soil taking over the path.
Sustrans is a charity working to promote active travel which includes cycling and walking, and more sustainable travel options. They look after the network of paths that provide safer and more pleasant cycling, horseriding and walking routes.
Super Simon who is in charge of coordinating the volunteer rangers arrived with his van full of tools and equipment. Other volunteers from Sustrans and from Sheffield Litter Pickers joined us too.
Linda, Max and Kim (a local to this area) had already completed a mission at Graves Park before coming along for some Sustrans action. Linda has the joy of the complexity of cycle paths to Meadowhall having found a route along the canal.
James had 'technical issues' so didn't make it but was there in spirit. I think it was a puncture to fix on his bike without a repair kit but other technical issues may have popped up last thing. Without James slowing her down (!) Michelle took the super highway to Meadowhall along Attercliffe Road which is a direct, speedy way, if a little busy. The ice on the Five Weirs Way first thing was also a little disconcerting. Yvonne arrived on her bike having enjoyed the Five Weirs Walk and navigated her way to the meeting point of the task which is a challenge with Meadowhell getting in the way of any nice bike ride.
Celine rocked up after some well integrated public transport involving the bus and tram that linked up like a dream. A day ticket with all bus companies and the tram across Sheffield is a Saturday morning treat. (About £5)
We soon got to work and found that the cycle route has some benches where people love to stop and really get in some good solid drinking. The cans are perfectly disguised in the undergrowth so you really can enjoy the peaceful ambience and a can (or 5). It gave us lots to do.
The sun was shining and lots of cyclists thanked us for our work.
After a couple of hours we all found our various routes home with the Five Weirs Way being used by the cyclists.
Cafes, swimming, lunch and coffee were enjoyed afterwards which is needed to sustain the Sheffield GG weekend of community missions. A few people are doing all four. Well done gang!
Thanks everyone who came :)
Look after the National Cycle Network in Sheffield - keeping it open and clear for use, developing new routes, generally promoting Active Travel in Sheffield
