Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Roy Hill
Five of us (ok, 6 - sorry Rita) met up on Saturday at the old Waterhall golfclub at 9.30(ish) to help empty out the old clubhouse. Since the golf course shut down last year, Brighton Food Factory - a non-profit organisation providing Brighton's community groups with food that goes to those in need - is working hard to ensure the building can be repurposed to a multi-functional community centre.
We got stuck in, clearing and sorting loads of old golfing paraphanelia that had been left behind in the old changing rooms, including golf shoes, various items of clothing, scorecards and balls. While we did so, we briefly debated the unequal treatment of women in the world of golf - only around 10 lockers were provided for the ladies, whereas the men must have had around 60. Still, they (ahem...) had more sockets for doing their hair, which Helena discovered when trying to plug in the vacuum cleaner.
Muir from Brighton Food Factory was delighted with the transformation, and may well have some more tasks for us in the coming weeks, by which time the new clubhouse cafe should be up and running!
BFF was set up during Covid to provide fresh produce distribution as part of the Emergency Food Response. We're now still providing this service and are also part of Brexit resilience plans. BFF has 4 staff where 3 of whom are working part paid and part voluntarily. We have been donated a space for some months to help us increase efficiency at Waterhall Golf Club - now disused. Our plans are to make use of the old club house for food storage, office space and to use the kitchen to allow some produce to be semi-prepped for those who can't manage this themselves. We would like to use the office as a dedicated work space but just don't have the time to try to make this a bit nicer to work in with a lick of white paint. We would be grateful for assistance. All spare budget we have is spent on feeding back to help subsidise community food.
