Report written by Southwark runner
Three Goodgym-mers sacrificed their lie-in on Saturday morning to clear brambles from some abandoned land.
We met Lara who provided us with shiny new equipment, and shared with us her vision of turning the area into a community garden.
We quickly got to work, hacking away at the brambles. Since we were visible from the main road, we attracted interest from various passer-bys who were really positive about our work and maybe even some volunteers for the next session!
We made a great amount of progress but there is still more to do. We can't wait to come back soon!
The Garden at Lower Road is a local community association made up by local residents. It was set up in September 2020 with the only purpose of developing and managing a community garden in an abandon strip of land. The garden will be dedicated to growing vegetables and plants, for the wellbeing of our local community. It will be designed to be accessible for the youngest and eldest of our communities. Children of all ages will be specially welcome. The garden will be gated and accessible to members and volunteers during agreed times and open sessions, to be held on an agreed schedule such as Sunday mornings. Everyone is welcome to become a member or volunteer of The Garden at Lower Road. The Garden at Lower Road is an independent non-for-profit organisation and for now it relies on donations. We are exploring income streams and have applied for public funding for capital work.
