8 do gooders hit the streets, took on the task and pounded tarmac

we are so close to getting it finished

This week we welcomed three newcomers. Shouts out to Matilda, Katie and Bethan - great having you along guys. You brought a nice dynamic to the group. Briefing, introductions and warm up done we set off in search of this week’s light at The Wolves Lane Horticultural Centre. We were tasked with clearing a narrow strip of land between two poly tunnels of all the weeds and roots in preparation for planting. This piece of land is overlooked by the centre’s café, we have visited the site a number of times in the past and are so close to getting it finished.

the weather was perfect

Our run out was a pretty nice one as the weather was perfect. We arrived at the centre to find Clare the task owner waiting for us at the front gate. There were smiles all round as she welcomed us. We were then lead through the centre, past the heated palm house and reptile enclosure to a very small opening between two poly tunnels which we use for access to the narrow area we are working on.

Ollie smashed it with his pun suggestion of Roots Manoeuvre

We all got “tooled up” then straight to it – Olli wasted no time in getting stuck in and manoeuvring those roots. I was pretty impressed with Bethan, Katie and Matilda’s efforts. They couldn’t wait to do good which made me feel good and the good vibes flowed. At this point I thought I’d ask the group if they had any ideas for this week’s pun, I mentioned Romulus and Remus proudly as I actually remembered one of my primary school lessons. It may not look like it but trust me this was many years ago. Anyways! This primary school knowledge may have caused bafflement among the run report reader so we decided against it. Quicker than that idea died Ollie smashed it with his pun suggestion of Roots Manoeuvre. Big up the man like Ollie!

whole heartedly

It was now time for our [silly] face off competition. I explained to the girls that they simply needed to look silly for a photo and they whole heartedly did so (i think we may have a superhero in the group). Then came the boys and I must say boys you made a really good effort here. We may have a winner from this week’s pics alone – we shall see. As we finished the last silly pic I mentioned that we had 15 minutes left. Then came the last push and clean up. We made good progress and hopefully we’ll get the clearing finished on our next visit.

deadly Datura

After a quick picture with the now famous 9ft high deadly Datura plant, which looks and smells amazing, and we said our goodbyes and headed for the road – a quick round of high fives and we were off again into the night. The return run was a good one. As we approached the home straight I spurred everyone on to dig in for the sprint finish before warming down, stretches and some banter commenced.

Until next week folks – stay fit, do good and look out for the light.

Maximum boost to Ollie for this week’s pun!
