Tessa and Sheila turned out to help with the regular Spital Cemetery work party in Windsor on a beautiful, sunny autumn morning. At previous sessions (together with Juli) we had been working to free three gravestones (which we have nicknamed 'The 3 sisters' ) of the encroaching ivy. A tangled mass still remained on top of just one of the stones, and we were keen to clear this last one. Working slowly, snipping away one stem at a time, progress seemed slow. With 10 minutes to go before the end of the session, we were just lamenting that again we would not achieve our goal, when all of a sudden the whole section just lifted off the top of the stone. Success! We could now make out some of the writing on the stone, in memory of Samuel Acutt and his son Edwin. A quick Google revealed that they were present in the Windsor 1881 census at the ages of 50 and 8 respectively. and that Samuel was a master baker, originally from Portland in Dorset. There must be so many stories to find in this graveyard, and we look forward to a return visit

Well done for looking them up! A master baker! Very pleased we could decipher enough to be able to find this out.
