12 GoodGymers had the best of times clearing away big thorny bushes, moving heavy stones, cutting down ivy and mowing grass at Whipton Community Hall in order to improve the garden and to tackle anti-social behaviour

It was one of those amazing late summer evenings when the air was warm, the sunset stunning and the GoodGymers were out there getting fit and doing good- a terrific Tuesday for sure! A warm welcome to Jane who joined us for the first time! We hope you enjoyed it and that we see you soon again!

Doing Good

Whipton Community Hall is run by a small board of just 4 people who have worked very hard with the upkeep of the garden surrounding the hall and with tackling the anti-social behaviour that unfortunately takes place there. This evening we gave them some much needed help and in just 45 minutes we managed to:

  • Cut down a huge rosehip bush that was full of thorns and blocked the view of the hall.
  • Moved a big heavy stone from inside the hall to the outside.
  • Cut down lots of ivy from the walls and pulled it out of the flowerbeds.
  • Mowed the lawn.
  • Transported all cut down branches to the compost heap.

In addition to this three of our GoodGymers went out and delivered Whipton Community Magazine in the streets around the hall, really smashing the good deeds this evening!

It's been a long time since we worked that hard at a task! I don't think there was a single muscle group in our bodies that didn't get a work out! Fantastic effort guys and so great to see what a difference we made! Just check out the before and after photos!

Getting fit

This evening was the first time since March that our group did some running together and it could not have been a nicer evening for it! It was so nice to be out there together, to hear the tapping of our feet and watch the sun go down over the rolling hills past Exeter.

This is just what a Tuesday evening should be like! We've missed this so much!

In order to run in safe way and to follow all current Covid-guidelines we divided our group in to two groups with six runners in each group, we kept good social distancing the whole time and only re-grouped in places where there was plenty of space.

A big shout out to our brilliant taskforce Lisa and Craig who lead the second group and another shout out to everyone in my group for doing all the extra squats he he he!

We also avoided running through the city centre and kept to very quiet side streets with wide pavements. This meant that our run became a bit longer than planned and we clocked up a whole 9 k! Not bad for the first time back! You guys are just the best!

Next up

We have a lot of Community Missions listed for the next few weeks, some with fitness sessions linked to them and some without. Take a look at the listings here and sign up to one that suits you. I'd love to have you along!
