Three runners met to help out with further sessions of tree planting at Ockwell's Park - planting which will contribute to the Queen's Green Canopy to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee next year. Juli, Anita and Sheila met Alistair, the taskowner from Groundwork South, in the car park and between us we lugged the spades, mallets, stakes, tree protectors and the all-important saplings to the planting site (although to be fair, Alistair did most of the heavy stuff in the wheelbarrow). But it's amazing how something that feels quite light at the start of the walk had got much heavier by the end! A good warm-up before we started the main task. The site is in the flood plain, and boy did we know it, there was much squelching on the way there, and when digging the planting slots. No watering in required. With such experienced tree planters, by the end of the session we had planted 75 prickly hawthorn saplings, protected from any wildlife who may find them a tempting nibble. In a few years they will have formed a thicket, together with the existing planting. More planting sessions planned for the 3rd, 8th and 15th of January - come and get involved, but don't forget your wellies!
