Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Bethan Critchley
Three seasoned GoodGymers from Hammersmith and Fulham met with Ms K's social worker on Friday afternoon to kit out Ms K's new flat with some furniture before she moved in later that afternoon. Cookie, Helen and Beth had quite the list of items to assemble, including a TV stand, 2x chairs and a dining table, a chest of drawers, a temporary blind and also they needed to secure the two halves of the divan bed together. We studied the instructions carefully to ensure everything was in the correct place for Ms K, rather than attempting to assemble without reading them (as seems to be appealing for many people with flat pack furniture!)
We decided that the best strategy was to divide and conquer the tasks, with Cookie initially tackling the last bit of assembly of the TV stand whilst Helen and Beth started with the two dining chairs. Thankfully, Cookie had come prepared with his own tools, otherwise we would all have been sharing one screwdriver!
TV stand finished, Cookie moved on to the dining table whilst Helen and Beth headed into the master bedroom to get started on the chest of drawers. This was the item with the most complicated instructions and which took us the longest to assemble - Cookie finished the dining table and put up the blind before jumping in to help. We had to adapt and overcome our shortage of a hammer to nail the back board onto the drawers... thankfully, Cookie's light and wrench made ideal hammering devices (and miraculously didn't break either!)
We finished assembly and tidied away all the packaging within two hours - not bad going for so much furniture! Ms K's social worker thanked us for our help, and we were on our way home to finish off our working days and enjoy the weekend.
