Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Southwark runner
Ana, Jess and I met on a balmy Saturday morning to do some gardening for Mrs J. We also had a special guest, Jackie, a photojournalist who wanted to see what a Good Gym mission was all about and snap a few photos of us in action!
Mrs J has a beautiful garden, with many different flowers and plants and a big bramley apple tree at the back. She has lived in the house since 1941 and said there used to be an Anderson shelter in the garden during the war. She also told us how her neighbour used to keep chickens who would be let loose and run up and down the road - truly free range!
We weeded and mowed and swept and pruned. Ana and Jess did a great job of pulling down the vines from the apple tree (which Mrs J told us had fallen during the storm of 1987 but had somehow managed to survive!)
We were joined by a couple of friendly neighbourhood cats who seemed keen to help us with our task, and were only briefly scared away by the lawn mower. It was lovely to chat amongst ourselves, and to Mrs J. It was also great to talk to Jackie about Good Gym and how much we all enjoy being part of it.
Mrs J was very pleased when I showed her the photo of our handiwork and said her garden looked like a park and she hardly recognised it!
With a bag of apples each (and some left behind for Mrs J) we went on our way. Jess and I rode into the distance while Jackie took her final few photos. We can't wait to see the finished article!
