Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Liverpool runner
On Saturday of Storm Dennis, 3 GoodGym runners went to Christopher Grange Sight Loss Learning Hub in Knotty Ash to help out at their health and wellbeing event.
The event was run by Vispa which is a group of local organisations working to provide physical and wellbeing activities for visually impaired people in Merseyside.
Through filling in the registration forms, we got to know some of the attendees, how much exercise they currently do and would like to do. Despite some substantial barriers (like needing a guide and transport), we found out many did more exercise than us three GoodGymers did!
It was heartening and inspiring to chat to so many people and hear their stories. This included the lunch time blind speaker who had ran ultramarathons across deserts and flown from UK to Australia in a microlight glider.
Throughout the day we help guide the attendees to sessions on Mindfulness, Laughter Yoga (which sounded like a riot!) and something called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique aka Tapping).
We also got to meet other contacts at Bradbury Fields and they've got lots of activities coming up which GoodGym can definitely help with in the future. Watch this space!
Special big thank you to Mat for coming way before his shift to help out
We offer rehabilitation and support to people who have lost their sight or whose vision has deteriorated to an extent that affects their everyday life. Our aim is to help our service users regain confidence and independence. We provide advice and training in skills that enable them to engage in everyday activities despite the obstacles caused by visual impairment. Apart from supporting people with sight loss, we also work on raising public awareness about visual impairment. That is why we have developed a training course (available online or in print) and provide awareness training for various groups.
