I was very fortunate to choose Thursday this week rather than Wednesday, as the weather was much nicer. By all accounts the volunteers all got soaked through to the skin yesterday.

Basically, all the Grannies and Grandads were turning up at STEAM to have their first COVID-19 vaccination. My job was to marshal the Blue Badge car park and show them all where to park, how to get from their car to the hall, and then how to exit the car park afterwards.

There were a few anxious faces, so I thought a bit of ‘Stuart humour’ would cheer them up. All the very slow weak ones, especially the ones who looked anxious, were told –

Once you’ve had that jab you’ll be running back to the car. It gives you superpowers!

Let’s just say most thought it was amusing.

Then there was a very old (in their 90’s) very slow couple walking in holding hands. I said good morning and commented to the chap that he had a gorgeous girlfriend. He laughed, but she told me in no uncertain terms that she was his wife and they’d been married 62 years thank you very much’.

But best of all was the lady who turned up at 09:25 and told me she had an arrival time of 09:20. I told her she was late and she’d have to sit on the naughty step when she got to the hall. She then asked the door marshal where the naughty step was, as she had to sit on it for being late.

I was going to be there the whole day, but as usual (in a nice way) it was volunteer overkill with 8 (eight) car park marshals seeing one car every five minutes to its space.

I decided to just do the morning shift in the end :-)
