Report written by Ellen
This weekend 5 of us GoodGymmers became #foodheroes, by helping to collect food for those in need.
The food we collected in Canton's Tesco Metro will go to frontline charities and community groups that they supply and be turned into delicious meals for the vulnerable people that they help.
But far from being hard work, it was truly inspiring, from the Tesco staff who helped us settle in, to FareShare Phil who came to thank us, to the shoppers themselves of course who donated so generously. That includes two people too busy to shop who handed over £10 each! (and which Emily spent in store, buying even more supplies).
As Marie so beautifully put it: *"Some lovely people getting involved and donating. A family got their 3 kids involved and they each put something in the trolley." *
I think there's something in my eye 😢
FareShare Cymru is based on the outskirts of Cardiff and serves charities and community organisations across South Wales. Last year, FareShare Cymru saved 511 tonnes of surplus food from waste – enough to provide almost 950,000 meals – which was diverted to 136 organisations, including homeless shelters, school breakfast clubs and community centres. Volunteers are key to FareShare Cymru’s success and new people are always welcome. If you would like to volunteer to help alleviate food poverty and food waste in the region, click here. Keep in touch by signing up to the FareShare Cymru South Wales e-newsletter.
