Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Amy L (she/her)
For our area's first ever Community Mission where better to go than the Maidenhead Community Allotment - the same place we helped on our first ever Group Run back in February (run report is here if you want to check it out)?
It was great to see the fig tree that we moved in February thriving, raised beds and trugs we cleared and mulched brimming with greens, and the lavender in bloom. It was also great to be working together on a task again after months of group activities being on hold - albeit as a much smaller team.
Our evening's work is best summed up by Jess (hence-forth to be known as Lady Mix-a-Lot), who brilliantly tweeted:
We moved water butts and we cannot lie, lots of weeding too that we can't deny...when GoodGym walked (or ran/cycled) in, with their socially distanced team the enthusiasm set the pace and they got things done!!!
As well as helping the allotment, which grows veg and herbs for local residents and donates excess produce to Maidenhead Foodshare, we picked up over 5 bags of litter from the car park for the Boyn Grove Community Resource Centre next door. Sadly this secluded spot had clearly been used for lots of illegal lockdown parties.
When we finished at the allotment Ana, Meggie and Amy had a lovely chatty run around Pinkney's Green to notch up a few extra km before heading home.
We are really excited about getting out and helping our community more and more in the coming weeks. Check out what's coming up by clicking on this link. From helping baby toads to helping The Baby Bank there are plenty of opportunities to get involved!
The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
