SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Ellie Hutch
'Wood' you believe it; 8 Goodgymers ran 2 miles to pull nails, unscrew, dismantle and then carry a glorious structure of wooden artistry to a new home, all in the name of supporting - The Peckham Coal line development!
Okay okay okay confession before session - I was late, only 5 minutes but man oh man it was stressful!!! Stuck underground on the delightfully temperamental jubilee line, my journey was near to nightmare as I watched the time tick towards start kick Off!! Eeekkk... For those of you that don't know I AM NEVER LATE FOR ANYTHING!!!
But lucky for me, the Goodgym wonderboy that is Pritesh happened to be cruising past my base camp at Old Spike and noticed the troops so followed with a call to me, who by this point was only 2 stops away from Peckham Rye!! Phewwww. So with info relayed and a sprint down the high street I made it just after 7pm!!!! Thank Good(Gym)ness!
So with panting and apologies over, I could set to work on relaying the task for the night; The movement of a rather unusual artistic wooden structure for Peckham Coal Line community group. After the dismantle we needed to walk/jog it from its Bidwell street entrance, 700m up the road to chief coordinator of the community projects new gaff!! Easy peasy..... You "wood" think....
So lets track back...... If you're sat there wondering what the Peckham coal line http://peckhamcoalline.strikingly.com is all about here's some basics; This is a series of new linear link park paths between Queens Road Peckham & Rye Lane by using the disused Rickett coal sidings which were decommissioned in the 1950’s. The 1km elevated urban park would cut through the heavily built up ex-industrial area providing a precious green open space. This grassroots initiative was put forward by a group of committed local residents with big dreams and bright ideas. The Coal Line has social power way beyond it physical realisation as it link neighbours around a common cause; by tapping in the unbelievable diverse wealth of talent, skill, energy and enthusiasm which makes up our community they are creating a resilient network of residents who's collective strength can help define the future of Peckham in the face of external pressure. AMAZING
So meeting us with the most cheerful welcome ever was Nick, one of the lead community volunteers on the project, who presented us with a range of pliers and hammers to start our tasking and dismantling of the most unusual wooden structure I've ever seen. What followed was a series of hammer and nail comedy one liners and nifty twizzling work, to unscrew the planks and hey presto before we would say - TIMBER we'd done it!
After the dismantle it was full steam ahead, the journey towards Nick's new home and where the structure needed to be dropped off. Although we are a strong team of athletes, even this was an effort, particularly on the forearms! But like the badass crew they are, these Peckham pacers proved they are no southern fairies and smashed the distance in no time at all, even saving enough energy for some planks in the garden before we left!!!
After our drop, we could not stop, so off we did pop with honorary new homing pigeon Rob leading us home! Back at base it was no rest for the determined and the team thrashed through the last 10mins, with core and ab sequences to build strong structure from the centre of our temples!
Another brilliant night, worthy task and more good vibes than you can shake a wooden stick at - That's Southwark done for another week!!!! See you next time. POW POW
