Sheila joined a team of 3 other volunteers at Spital Cemetery for one of their regular tidy up sessions. While Karen did a litter-pick and looked for good spots to plant some donated snowdrops, Sue and Sheila tackled a stone cross which had become completely smothered in thick ivy. In the previous session we had made a good start in freeing the stonework, but Sue was determined to make more progress. We sawed, and we cut, we dug and we pulled at the tangled mass. Sue even gave the ivy a good talking to, telling it that we would not be beaten! We shall continue our quest at the next session. Towards the end, we went to help Margaret who had been tackling another ivy- covered headstone, and were able to pull the two apart, revealing the inscription for the first time for many years. The stone marked the grave of Collett Lines Read. Another satisfying morning
