Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by James Poole
On a drizzly and pretty miserable spring evening, five of GoodGym Redbridge's finest runners ran to Wanstead Community Allotments to weed and tidy and ran 5km in the process.
In what might be the worst weather since GG Redbridge launched in in July last year, a skeleton crew of hard souls met at Wanstead House Community Centre. Undeterred by the awful weather, James, Ellie, Neha, Chris and Peter ran down to Wanstead Community Allotments to help with the upkeep of this project.
Wanstead Community Allotments has been a long term project for the group and it's amazing to see how it has developed over the last year. It has been transformed from waist high grass and weeds to a proper vegetable and flower patch. With veg seeds now planted it will be great to see the transformation over the summer.
However, looking after an allotment is a never ending task and despite the recently laid bark chips, weeds are still managing to find their way through. So it was down to this intrepid bunch to tackle the pesky weeds and keep the pathways clear. With the weather deteriorating the group spent 30 minutes frantically weeding before heading back on to the streets for some fitness fun - which meant the Nutter Lane Relay (NLR).
The NLR has become a GG Redbridge classic and involves runners pairing up. One runs over the fly over and back while the other does a strengthening exercise on the other side. It's fast and furious and much harder than it looks. With the relay done all that was left was a short cool down jog back to base.
Another week and more good done in the Borough. Shout out to all those who came despite the bad weather and to Pete for taking photos this week! Why not join us next week and get fit and do good in the area.
