Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Leanne (she/her)
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Leanne and Maddy met up to cycle 10km to Mr A's house on the outskirts of York.
We were greeted by Mr A's neighbour, who showed us where to find him. Mr A himself used to be a keen gardener and had designed the garden himself over the 50 years that he'd lived there. Though he is no longer able to work in the garden, he was able to give us some very specific instructions on what we needed to and some top tips on which tools would be best to use. In short, anything growing between the paving stones in the front garden was fair game.
Soon after arriving, we set to work making scores of woodlice homeless by pulling up all the weeds, and scraping away any moss that we could find.
After 2 hours of weed pulling, hoeing and sweeping, the paved areas were looking much tidier and we left Mr A feeling a lot happier about his garden.
As a bonus good deed, Maddy rescued a bumble bee which was lying on the floor and looking a bit lethargic. With her help, it hitched a ride back onto the delicious flowers in Mr A's garden where it could refuel for the flight home. Since it was such a nice day, we stopped by a local pub to 'refuel' ourselves for the ride home with a celebratory shandy in the sunshine!
