Tonight 5 fabulous GG-ers ran 3.2km to pick litter along the River Lea with the Canal and River Trust. Possibly the smallest turnout to date in Haringey, but that didn't stop us from collecting 5 big bags full of litter plus two or three wheelbarrows worth from Tottenham Lock north along the river!
We were joined by GG newbie Sabrina – give her a cheer!
We then ran 1.6km to the lock, including our Cycle Lane Sprint - where Dave smashed a new PB. Well done, Dave!
At the Lock, Frances and Ross from the Trust were waiting for us, with a thorough hand-wash system for post-picking laid out along with all of the tools we'd need. We started with a safety briefing, then everyone popped on some safety gloves, glasses and head torches and grabbed a litter picker.
Dave helped Ross with the bigger items that needed to go in the wheel barrow, whilst everybody else got to work clearing the litter along the edges. We found all sorts, including: a buggy, a fully-intact garden umbrella infested with spiders, a jumper and other various items of clothing and many, many empty bottles.
Before we knew it, it was time to return all the tools and get rid of the bags of rubbish. The gang then went through the four-step hand-washing sequence with the buckets and anti-bac, so hopefully nobody ends up with any river diseases. Nobody saw any rats, just lots of cyclists. And one guy who thanked us for our efforts.
We were then treated to some biscuits and squash before saying our goodbyes and running back to base. We stopped outside The Volunteer for a selfie and again at Tottenham Green for some running drills, focusing on elbow drive and knee drive.
We then finished with a gentle jog back to TG Pools for some stretches and hi fives.
