Report written by Sheffield runner
6 GGrs joined Sheffield City Council (SCC) and volunteers from Friends of Parkwood Springs (FoPS) at this lovely woodland garden located within Parkwood Springs.
Treerific-Tourguide-Tim from SCC first gave us a detailed tour of the garden showing us the variety of species that have been planted in the garden including: alder, rhubarb, fruit bushes, day lily, plum trees, fig, cherry and even kiwi; with New Zealand flax being grown to make natures string for tying things together.
We split into Team GG and Team FoPS to maintain two sections of the garden:
- Team GG got to work de-weeding a section between the trees, turning the ground over to promote Chinese bramble ground cover and placing mulch over our work to discourage return weeds.
- Team FoPS de-weeded around fruit bushes, then placed matting and mulch over de-weeded sections to discourage return weeds.
Going tribal: 'Scurge of the dock' Celine did a great job battling the weeds, providing 'Lion's tooth' Kat a great source of dandelions for Kat and Ash's tortoise Frederick's breakfast the next day.
Going back to nature, twig-burner (SCC) Tim boiled up a Ghillie kettle to provide lovely hot drinks and we all came together to have a super sharing lunch with tasty treats provided by all, including: homemade bread and tasty mozzerella salad, homemade cheese scones, tangerines, flapjacks and biscuits made by Celine (that I can't remember the name of).
Tim (from SCC) and Louise (from FoPS) were really impressed with what we achieved today and would really appreciate future GG support. Team GG are joining into their event here held every 2nd Saturday of the month throughout the year. I have now listed all monthly Parkwood Forest Garden Sessions up to Dec 2019. You can find and sign up to future sessions here under Group Runs on the GG website.
Message from GG Kat: Thank you again to all the GG volunteers who came along today - you made it a first great session here!
At next month's session - GG Chris Dyer will be leading for Team GG.
To start off new GG Parkwood Forest Garden volunteers will be given a tour of the garden by Treerific-Tourguide-Tim from SCC.
There will be lots of de-weeding to continue with maybe some mulching.
