Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
8 do-gooders hit the streets, did the deed and ran 7.4k
GoodGym Haringey has hit it's 10th week
This evening there was a buzz in the air as we congregated outside the Tottenham Green Leisure Centre. GoodGym Haringey has hit it's 10th week, a baby step in the grand scheme of things but an achievement all the same. Well done to all involved thus far. We welcomed Lynette who's husband Gus has joined us in the past, great to have our first couple on board. Out to the core crew - much love as ever!!
fear not I had a back up plan
As the streets lit up we set off into the twilight. Our vivacious team proceeding toward the Wolves Lane Horticultural Centre. Dashing Dave taking the front of the group while I marked the back, with passers by running along side to ask what we were up to and a group of teenagers cheering us on shouting "why do you always run" behind us; we arrived at the task location. However, unfortunate we were unable to gain access to the site - fear not I had a back up plan.
She instantly injected her distinctive exuberance
After some chitter-chatter and a few phone calls I lead the group a short distance down the road to the Bracknell Close Estate, where we were welcome by the amazingly animated Ann who is the most adorable blind lady you will ever meet. She was so happy to see us, she literally let the whole neighbourhood know we had arrived with an excited, high volume welcome followed by a little dance - instantly injecting her distinctive exuberance into the already vivacious group. Just as she did during our previous visit, Ann took me by the hand and began to lead me on a brisk run along a path opposite her front door, pointing out which weeds and bushes she wanted us to pull up/cut back. Ann did this with phenomenal accuracy given the fact that she is blind. By this point our collective ebullience had consumed the estate and neighbours began to appear to find out what all the activity was about, with one even leaving their front door wide open: like back in the day when that sense of community wasn't so sparse. This really helped us get stuck into clearing the rubbish from the communal areas/gardens of the estate, coupled with weeding a flowerbed. Ann, who is an amazing host, then appeared with a hand full of bottled water and pineapple juice cartons for all; who had been working super hard I might add.
great feeling of accomplishment
Before long we had filled several bin bags of general rubbish along with three veolia bags of green waste and binned what seemed to be half a sofa. Our time was up way too quickly - as they say time flies when you're having fun. We set off heading back to HQ with a great feeling of accomplishment, given the barriers to our do-gooding earlier in the session. With a now compulsory sprint finish, quick warm down and brilliant display of balance together with great posture from Dashing Dave, during some static stretching, the session was over.
Oh also sending huge props to Dave and Chris for helping the lady who was petrified of the brazen fox that stood between her and the front door of the house she lived in - great shooing skills y'all.
Until next week folks - stay fit, do good and look out for the light
