Report written by Darryl Chamberlain
Hilly Fields isn’t just famous for its fiendish parkrun and amazing views across London. It also has a row of beautiful trees in its northeastern corner. The Friends of Hilly Fields recently planted some more to ensure this side of the park stays green. After a year, the saplings needed a bit of TLC to allow them to breathe and grow. Time to get GoodGym on the case!
Ten of southeast London's finest GoodGymmers - some fresh from parkrun (or as fresh as you can be on a very muggy morning) - met Rachel from the Friends of Hilly Fields. Our task was to clear the weeds around the saplings and put some mulch around them. We started wondering if anyone had any sun cream, then an hour into the task, nature started to take care of the next part of the task - watering! And in some style... But after a flurry of forking out the weeds and some determined work with the wheelbarrow to get fetch the mulch, we made a corner of Hilly Fields look a lot greener and healthier. It was great to meet Rachel and satisfying to get so much done.
The Friends are always looking for help - if you'd like to get involved, visit hilly.org.uk or search for "Hilly Fields, SE4" on Facebook, and you too can help give the Hilly Fields parkrunners of the future a bit more tree cover.
