Rebecca and I signed up to this mission to cut down Mrs E’s ivy. As I ran round the corner to her house, I could see that the ivy was formidable: it had grown thickly up two floors of the house. And when Mrs E let us in, we realised there was an even bigger problem. To reach the ivy, we would have to climb onto the garage or at least up a ladder balanced on a small square of patio! Neither of us had the head for heights for that and so we had to offer a hand with weeding and mowing instead. Both the front and back garden were covered in weeds, but the grass was minimal and the soil soggy. Nevertheless, Rebecca got stuck in with the mower whilst I made an attempt to pull up weeds at the edge of the garden. They were certainly well established - we were pulling out roots over a foot long! Mrs E didn’t have any trowels or forks so she offered us... a knife. An interesting choice, but it was better than nothing! We made a good difference to both the back and front garden in the time given... Now we hope that a professional gardener can return to defeat that ivy!
