Report written by Kati Law
This morning Zena Whalley and I drove over to the lovely Oakwell Hall to help our friends at Kirkwood Hospice with their Colour Rush, a major annual event on their fund raising calendar. A little later we were joined by Saul Muldoon who had cycled over and despite having a puncture on the way had managed to arrive in just an hour! Rosie, a member of the Kirkwood Hospice fund raising team, quickly put us to work meeting and greeting participants and helping on registration. The atmosphere was hotting up as we headed to the start line. Many participants were already covered in paint as the warm up started. Saul was to lead the hares, the faster runners, I was to lead the tortoises, who were setting off at a more leisurely pace a few minutes later and Zena was tailing the event to make sure everyone got back ok. In a cloud of coloured powder the hares were off, Saul working hard to keep ahead of the lad a fraction of his age! Then it was the tortoises turn. As lead runner I was first through the paint station and being a Colour Rush novice managed to digest quite a lot of pain! I soon got the knack of closing my eyes and mouth at the next paint stations. The route was two laps of the woodland surrounding Oakwell Hall. There was a really fun atmosphere and plenty of paint stations. It was really great to see so many people out having fun and enjoying the countryside. It was a real multi-generational event. Eventually we all finished and then the discussions began about how we were going to get clean again. Despite my initial misgivings the paint did wash off really easily and you’ll be pleased to know we are all back to our original colour, and most importantly our precious GoodGym t-shirts have survived!
