Report written by James Poole
On a chilly night in November, six of Goodgym's hardiest runners met to clean gutters, sweep leaves ands get fit and ran 5km in the process.
Well the weather has certainly turned and with tempretures just above zero degrees, the hardiest of runners met at Wanstead House Community Centre. The Centre has been our home for the last three and half years and we share space with all sorts of local community groups, creative writers, photographers, street dance groups and even astrologers. Its a veritable melting pot of community groups.
With all these groups using the centre it is important that it always look welcome and in a good state of repair. Which is where Goodgym steps in, we love helping around the house and keeping things spic and span. A couple of months back we cleaned some of the guttering on the theater building in the pouring rain BUT we didn't have the time to finish it all.
So, with James armed with a ladder heading back to the Theater and the rest of the crew armed with rakes, and shovels the hard work began. The leaf fall around the house becomes a huge problem at this time of year, blocking the gutter and drains and making the places slippery. But with six Goodgymers hard at work a huge pile of leaves was clearer and final sections of the gutter cleaned and blockage free. Nice work team.
With the good deed done all that was left was to head out onto the streets of Wanstead. We're using the darker winter nights to explore the borough and this week we headed North towards North Woodford taking in a more hilly route and some of the quiter roads. 35 minutes later we were back and ready to stretch it out with some post run exercises!
Why not get involved and join us next week for another night of doing good deeds in the borough and getting fit and the same time!
