Chairing Out The Jobs

Newham Report written by Brahma Pochee

Cold air back, but with it some healthy numbers for a trot down The Lea. Cat and Georgina blessing us with a cameo after a long stretch away, great to have the duo back. Rosie returning post-lurgy plus Brad and Paul getting stuck in after a while.

We discussed "guity tv pleasures", there's an array of nonsense that we just can't turn off: Gladiators, The Bachelor, Bad Architecture, Scrap heap challenge, First Dates, Selling Sunset and this weeks winner, moo-ve over everyone else, Georgina's youtube habit of watching cows get their hooves trimmed. You can't script this stuff.

The exhibition hall at Cody Dock looked like it had been developed a bit more since our last visit, the greenhouse I think just sprouted over night. Which isn't not normal for Cody Dock. One group swept, whilst another team made some chairs... and eventually all ten of us were on seat construction. Thirty chairs made and trillions of dust particles tidied, solid work that.

For those going to Cody Dock for Friday shin dig, send pics and have a cracker. See you next week for an overdue reunion at Hackney Adventure Playground, it's only been four years. I'll set up the listing now.

Till then,

B

No Spare Tyre

Newham Report written by Brahma Pochee

Another Wednesday in the heatwave. We welcomed three new faces to the crew, Chloe, Russel and Nacho. The muscular crossfit trio were a fine addition to our arsenal, physically and vibe wise. We discussed "if you could either fly or be invisible, which one would you pick?" Almost a unanimous decision on flying, nip back to NZ, go travelling etc. Some token invisibility answers in there too, but it would be a power hard not to abuse. In hindsight it's interesting to hear that no one would fight crime or save the world "I could shave 20mins getting to work" is more the response! Here's the light-hearted podcast I listened to on it.

Team bolstered by three at Nomadic Gardens, we couldn't find Jimmy but Sharon (not ours for once), came to the rescue. She instructed us to move about forty tires... clearly after seeing the crossfitters. Then lay some mulch down and get some plants in the ground. Considering we only started at 730pm after waiting around I think that's a very respectable half hour of volunteering. Top work one and all.

A chosen few executed a 'sandwhich session' on the way back, a mixture of grumbles and excitement preceded the interval, but when the whistle went you lot flew. I like these sessions as they hold you accountable, in order to nail that last rep you need to exercise pace management early on. Everyone smashed it, showcasing a well executed speed interval for east London onlookers.

Next week Abbey Gardens need our help, sign up here to help this gem of community garden.

Till then,

B

Weed Whackers

Newham Report written by Brahma Pochee

On a glorious June evening the clan nipped over to the local permaculture community garden. A couple of us walked, myself from Mile End due to a bad back, Sharon from base as she recovers from surgery.

Francesco met us there, a lovely chap who's a new volunteer for Get Out. We gloved up and split up; weeding, watering and compost turning - the holy trinity. The garden is flourishing with life, that includes unwanted flora, we stunted some of the growth near the tomatoes, onions and potatoes. The compost had Si and Hils doing solid work rotating it for a good chunk of the session, hastening up that decomposition. Sharon took over on watering and did a full round of the beds and the polytunnels, lovely work.

As our sessions go it was a relatively relaxed one, allowing me to get the scoop on Bath racing and socialising. Bravo again to all who made it and equally made strides in their running progression; from Dimple's first 10k to Kev's 'getting it done' execution after a really tough few weeks. Hats off to you all, sounded a cracking weekend.

Next week we meet Jimmy at Nomadic gardens, expect more of a workout, possibly in the form of shifting tonnes of wood chip. Sign up here

Till then,

I Got 99 Problems But A Bench Ain't One

Newham Report written by Brahma Pochee

Long hiatus since a trip to our regular partner in Canning Town, Cody Dock. On a gorgeous May evening we met at base, took a casual seat and caught up. The RWQ offered a small insight into people's online time and perhaps ideas on how else to procrastinate, if you were short. "How do you waste most of your time online?" Guardian comments section, local buy and sell groups, effects pedals videos, lego making videos, window shopping bikes, mental health videos and reddit rabbit holes. There you have it, more ways to to spend time on the inescapable internet.

The jog down to Cody Dock was per norm, besides a random chap joining in, which was nice, hopefully we get him along for the whole session next time. After a small issue with locked gates - we didn't 'grease up' and squeeze through as per someone's recommendation (!) - I called Basia and Simon met us and told us what's what. Moving benches for the summer fair on Saturday and erecting the gazebo, all done in quick time, so much so that when Simon asked for us to do some flyering we couldn't say no. Banking a few more miles we headed towards Star Lane where two groups deposited the flyers, completing a rather effective slot at Cody Dock.

On a roll, we pitched up a kilometer from Printhouse and managed a small full body circuit; especially hitting upper body strength and lower body power. Was great to conclude the eve with a drink, courtesy of Dan, an absolute treat to have the big man back, you've been missed mate.

If you fancy more of the same next week then I've got good news for you - Get Out Garden awaits us: sign up here

Enjoy the belting weather this weekend and see you next week.

To Dig Or Not To Dig?

Newham Report written by Brahma Pochee

Huddling outside base, a warm air was punctuated as cold rain fell on team. We flew through an improvised question: "what's your favourite Parkrun - or run if you haven't done one, yet?" Upton Park, Valentine's Park, Holtham Parkrun, a run somewhere in Southampton, canal loop and Beckton coming in for the win for the jovial ways.

Down to Get Out Gardens, a first for Matt and Cat in the Bow permaculture haven. We were missold a planting session but had a solid stint at weeding instead. Two beds, two teams, several forks and trowels - we got to business. Catching up on life as we went along; Coronation concert line-up, Mexican tequila tasting, outsourcing work abroad, two week Half Marathon training plans and more.

The before and after pics look great (which I can't seem to upload). I do love a Wednesday eve at Get Out, such a compact biodiverse spot off the urban Bow rd. I'll book another one in there in a few weeks. But from one awesome green community space to another, next week it's Abbey Garden - sign up here

Get some lovely weekend miles in as the temp picks up a bit, see you'll next week.
