Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
In August 2019, Area Activator (former Trainer) Simon took over the reins of Goodgym Islington from legend Paul Bown before his departure to a new life in Sheffield. 5 years have passed since this first group run session (with a global pandemic in the middle of it), and we are thrilled to think back on the hundreds of projects we have completed since then!
This evening, our crew met outside the Arsenal Community Hub (on perhaps the warmest day of the year!) for a social run across the borough. After a chat about the Olympics (climbing was our favourite event!) and an introduction during our dynamic warm up (welcome to first time GG Islington runner Kieran!), we ran together up Highbury Hill and onwards to Highbury Quadrant Estate Gardens!
Upon our arrival, we met up with local gardening wonder woman Frannie, who had a smashing hands-on task ready for us. But first, we were treated to some freshly served water melon slices from one of the residents of Highbury Quadrant- an incredible gift on such a warm and humid night. Together, we wheelbarrowed a collection of hoes, rakes, secateurs and loppers from "the meadow" and through to "the orchard" green spaces, and set to work.
Our task for the evening was to cut back a patch of overgrown greenery and vines, and the pathways that surround this spot. All excess weeds were collected for the compost heap back in the meadow. Following the clipping and snipping, we then laid out several sheets of tarpaulin-like material across 10 metres or so. This area has now been made into a Children’s Story Time Spot, where youngsters can gather together for reading classes. Our last task involved laying down large wooden logs around the spot, to keep the sheet in place, and to offer natural seats for children to enjoy. We made a complete transformation in the course of an hour!
During our session, a local fox family keep an eye on us working next to their den at the bottom of the garden. One cub in particular was very curious, and watched us intently from a safe distance!
To complete an excellent task well done, our team ran/walked/cycled an extra mile to Someday Bar in Finsbury Park for celebratory pizza and refreshments. Well done, everyone!

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
There's nothing better than chasing away that Monday feeling than coming along to a GoodGym session - you'll never regret starting the week with some activity that leaves you buzzing and is also very rewarding!
Last night a dozen of us were up for just that, and we started off the evening with a warm up, before naming our favourite green spaces in London. It was little surprise perhaps that Battersea Park came out top, but special mentions go to Wandsworth common, Hyde Park, Fulham Palace and of course, our GoodGym garden!
We set off for Doddington and our task for the evening. It is always a pleasure when we climb that metal staircase to see how the garden is changing and developing all the time. Last night the transformation was particularly evident as this community space had been given loads of fabulous furniture and other bits and pieces from the Chelsea Flower show.
Our first job was a particularly precarious one. We were trusted to move an incredibly heavy - and even more expensive (several thousand pounds...!) table into position. Our first attempt wasn't successful so we drafted in more GGers which did the job. We were also told the chairs were designed and donated by Jay Blades of Repair Shop fame, which is pretty exciting!
Our next task was to transport and spread two tonnes of top soil. Now, we're always up for a challenge, and yesterday was no exception. We only had a series of trugs to be able to do it, which added that extra element of fun. Bonus upper body workout!
After all that lifting, it was only right we worked our lower body as well, so we went downstairs for our legs blast. Six intense minutes and loads of different variations later and we were done. Great work everybody!
Next week we're back at our own GoodGym garden - come and check out how we're doing!

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
After such a long spell of hot water, our local trees are in desperate need of some extra love - and that's where GoodGym comes in!
We met last night at our usual spot, and it was lovely to see some new as well as returning faces. We started off with a little bit of a challenge with our warm up, testing our coordination and reactions, and it soon became clear everybody was on fire!
Our job for the evening was at Bramford community garden, so after introductions and a lovely chat about all the great things we did over the weekend (including parties on boats, family time, BBs and catching up with friends - all the fun!) we set off for Wandsworth Town.
Halfway through the run we had a little pit stop to have a photo at a previous task where we have even been namechecked on the plaque - if you're passing Bramlands Close by Clapham Junction check it out!
After 2.5km we arrived to find Sha, who manages the garden, waiting for us with several cannisters and instructions about which trees needed the most attention. Over the next half an hour we crossed over the road to Maccy D's, which had generously allowed us to pilfer their water supply, and back over to the garden to give the thirsty plants a good drenching. Well done team, you will have saved several leafy lives! We also got in a good litter pick, focusing on plastic bottles and those annoying cig butts.
Next week it's bank holiday Monday, and we will be having a group run but it will be slightly earlier on. You can sign up for Monday fun right here. Until then, have a lovely week!
