10 Christmas wreaths spotted and dozens of charity leaflets sent through doors on a snowy day in Bath

Bath Report written by Ruth

Well it turns out no GoodGymers had spare time over Christmas to take part in our challenge. Even Ruth - who came up with the idea - didn't manage to do it until Christmas was well and truly over.

But she still counted 10 Christmas wreaths in two miles. It made her wonder what actually happens to people who leave their decorations up after Twelfth Night. They're probably still tucking into the Ferrero Rocher.

While completing the task, which was a bit of a humdinger - walking down the hill to Oldfield Park and back up again - this trusty GoodGymer took the opportunity to deliver more leaflets raising awareness of Julian House's winter appeal.

She hopes the sight of a flyer landing on the doormats of a cold, frosty and snowy Bath might prompt residents to support a charity that helps the area's most vulnerable people.

Ruth Wishart earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.

Ruth completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Ruth was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

On the first day of Wastemas we picked up all the litter

Bath Report written by Ruth

On the first day of Wastemas one GoodGymer helped at a community litter pick in Odd Down, Bath.

They found one broken umbrella

Two sharp knives

Three Sainsbury's trolleys/baskets

At least four vapes

Five discarded plates

Six cigarette ends

Seven metal notice board bits

Eight plant pots

Nine plastic bottles

10 or more bottle tops

Around 11 bits of clothing

More than 12 tin cans

And a whole lot of rubbish besides!

In fact just two people - Ruth from GoodGym and Andy Stewart from Odd Down Community Association filled SIX council bags of waste and made quite an impact in the community.

So, despite being a bit short staffed on both sides, our day wasn't wasted.

The next Odd Down Community litter pick will take place on the first Saturday of January. All are welcome!

Go Mary arms

Bath Report written by Helen Conner (she/her)

We had 1 hour and around 500 flyers.

We all adopted our own techniques, in an attempt to whizz around as many houses as possible. Mary's technique was my favourite. Posting a flyer through one letterbox, and then stretching out her body and arm to reach the letterbox of the house next door to save her time in walking around. Or if this was not possible, she hurdled the boundary wall to post to the next door neighbour.

We jumped from street to street and quickly got through hundreds of flyers. Dogs, spiders and garden rubbish all attempted to deter our determination but we amazingly got through them with the help from Ruth finishing up the remaining stack.

That's a whole lot of flyers for Julian House which hopefully will encourage people to sign up to their Circuit of Bath walk to raise vital funds for their charity.

Well done all!

Running pub crawl - dreaming of beer gardens and sunshine!

Bath Report written by Sam Ollason

Each week we have been setting ourselves a fun challenge to keep us all motivated to keep running while we have been locked down.

The challenge in the past week has been to take selfies outside pubs in Bath when we are on our regular runs. It’s not quit the pub trip we planned but hopefully it didn’t turn into a pub crawl for anyone!

There were some fantastic pictures sent into the GG Bath WhatsApp group from all over Bath. In particular, Ruth modelled some amazing hats, Max found some pub signs with some animals on them and Steph found a wagon (well, sort of)!

It really helped keep me motivated to keep going this week and I have heard from others that it really helps them, so thanks so much for engaging.

Next week we are running 5km - but with a twist!

GG Bath Hill Sprints Challenge!

Bath Report written by Sam Ollason

This week our challenge at GG Bath was to include some hill sprints into our fitness routines. The challenge was to go for a run and find a hill (not too hard in Bath!) to sprint up it as fast as you can for 10s, 10 times over. So overall you would be sprinting uphill for 100s. No mean feat!

Although lots of us regularly run, sprinting is something that most of us never do, so its a great way to push our body outside of its comfort zone and increase our fitness levels.

We had entries from runners completing their challenge all over Bath and it was great to see the images sent into the WhatsApp group. This helped motivate me to get out there and do my sprints and I know other runners benefited from the support from the GG Bath community, so thanks to everyone who engaged.

After feeling the benefits of these hill sprints (I was worn really quickly, I slept really well and I ached in ways I don't usually ache from running) I am going to start including hill sprints into my regular training - are you?

This week the challenge is another fun scavenger hunt, but with a twist! I look forward to seeing your entries!
