What a beautiful morning spent at Langley Park helping the Ranger Conservation team.
Helen, Sheila and I arrived in time for the briefing where Ranger Matt gave us the low down on the task in hand. Lots of other volunteers who come regularly to help but the three of us were branching out onto new treeatories on this one as it was our very first task.
After the briefing we walked over to the area where a dead hedge was to be created. I love tasks like this but Helen was in her element! We learned all about a dead hedge and what the purpose of it was (to basically protect the woodland area from people entering it and to help protect keep the animals in).
Oak-ay let’s get to work
In smaller groups we started off by using the loppers to cut down the branches which would then be used to create the dead hedge.
Fortunately the branches were nice and soft so took minimal effort to cut! Helen was loving the task and I was rooting for her all the way! Sheila was busy working on the dead hedge with unbeleefable effort!
The rest of the volunteers were so helpful and guided us on what to do when we got stumped
And wood you believe it? There is a different saw to use on dry wood vs wet wood!
Helen and I spent about 2 hours helping to create the dead hedge whilst Sheila stayed on a little bit longer as she was not Elm-ost done yet! A little birdie tells me that by the time Sheila had finished the team had completed the dead hedge over the stream!
Overall we had a tremendous time! Would highly recommend coming along to the next task we log (likely to be next month).
Well done team! Great job done
