Baby Got Back!

Wednesday 21st July 2021

Written by Euclides Montes

497 long days since we had our last proper group run (all the way back to the heady days of March 2020), 13 Goodgymmers gathered at our new HQ for the first group run post-lockdown. And the feeling was epic!

Kudos Corner

This one goes out to the whole Goodgym community. What a bloody tough couple of years we've all had, and this wonderful community put in the effort not only to stay together but to grow, look after each other, try and keep fit and - above all - still do good. And Goodgym, my beloved, you do good. <3

Slam Dunks and Mexican'ts

We were already giddy with excitement by the time we met at the Blue House Yard in Wood Green. As we prepared to take a group pic before setting off, the task owner from last week's community mission happened to be around and came over to say thanks. The festival was a sold out success and our thorough leafleting helped in part to achieve that goal. We even got a round of applause from the punters at the Yard. Let me tell you, excitement levels were now effervescent.

Dave, Latoya, and Louise were today's walking squad, and Gramps led the rest of the crew on a shorter run than previously advertised. Listen, it was very hot, I'm not a monster.

The run was really lovely. We followed the New River Path north into Bowes Park before going through Woodside Park and White Hart Lane Rec. We were cheered by the locals along the way - as John remarked, the send off from the Yard and the support along the way made it feel almost as if we were running a race.

Once at the task, we were met by Anne and Mara, resident advocates who explained the task to us. We cleared a front garden that is going to be the venue of a community BBQ/public consultation this weekend. We also prepared a site in the Estate for the installation of a basketball hoop, trimmed a rather unruly hedge, and also cleared the Estate Name Sign which had previously been devoured by the greenery.

I'm not going to lie, it was a buzzing kind of evening. There was a lot of laughter and bonhomie but that all came crashing to a thundering halt when Latoya forced us to play Sally. Flower is an awful song. In the words of the American wordsmith Eminem, "And Moby? You can get stomped by Obie." If you know, you know.

I jest, even that proved fun. We then said our goodbyes and few of us ran towards the Goodness Brewery in Wood Green for pizza, beverages and kids Olympics - you had to be there.

We. Are. Well. And. Truly. Back.

Next week, 6:45pm on Wednesday at Blue House Yard for more fun. Come!
