Last but not least

Sunday 7th September

Written by Bryon Chan

Brentford Festival is an annual, community run, family friendly festival that has been running since 2005. Unfortunately, due to operational difficulties, it was announced that this year's edition would be the last. It was a great relief, then, that the late summer downpours made way for a glorious Sunday in West London. From 9am, Goodgym was directed by the unflappable festival organiser Linda to erect gazebos, take furniture and bins out of the storage area and place flags around the site. While we were faced with gazebos with various important bits missing or broken, Kash and Sevan's experience came through and we ultimately conquered the task with typical Goodgym team work and communication. Not long after we finished our setup shift, people started arriving and the festival quickly swung into gear, judging by how much everyone was enjoying themselves, it was obvious just how much this festival would be missed.

Into the Wild Green Yonder

Sunday 1st September 2024

Written by Kash

The Brentford Festival setup task on Sunday morning at Blondin Park welcomed us with two things: mints that Linda, the event manager, handed to all volunteers, and a sight of a leaking wheelbarrow.

"Looks like your barrow didn't make it to a portaloo" - Sevan.

Ealing GoodGymers Sevan and Kash, and Gus, who - similarly to the Brentford Festival itself - operated on the boundaries between Ealing and Hounslow, joined Nick and two other festival crew members. The six-person team set up three gazebos of varying numbers of legs and difficulty - an excellent refresher job to check the GoodGymers' knowledge of their straps and pins!

After finishing with the tents, the GoodGym trio looked for Linda to ask for some odd jobs. Among the assignments were:

  • Fetching keys
  • Fetching a speaker set
  • Locating the equipment for the bar tent
  • Setting up a fence for a dog show
  • Locating a standpipe in an apple orchard (sadly, that one did not work out)

The morning session culminated with Gus' solo SAS-style expedition through a scrub to deliver the key ingredient to every successful festival stage: the power cable. Did he make it back from the wild green yonder? Read about the next task to find out!
