Loxford community garden with excitement

Saturday 18th June 2022

As i was waiting around, a firetruck pulled up nearby, a bin for some flats was smoking, they dealt with that quickly.

I got started on clearing the rest of the brambles, pulled up some of the roots, and scratched myself again. Comparing the before and after pictures, I believe if we had 1 more person all the brambles would have been cut down. The roots are a bigger job though, but its starting to look more like a gathering space.

Getting Up To Sctatch

Saturday 4th June 2022

Post ParkRun James and Linda cycled from Valentines Park to Loxford Community Centre. We had been asked to help clear the little yard at the side which had become overgrown with brambles.

We set off with our clippers to clear as much as we could in the hour allotted. Despite wearing good gloves it is an impossible job to do without getting scratched and what would have been a peaceful session was punctuated with the odd exclamation and expletive as we both got systematically punctured.

Despite the minor abrasions it was a rewarding session, we got a fair bit cleared including part of a broken bench and half a massive shrub that James got out in one go.

The task owner was very pleased saying she was glad she had found GoodGym as by saving the center from using professional help meant they could provide some of their own services free of charge for people in need.

MC Goodgymers scratching and cutting

Saturday 28th May 2022

A lot of us hadn't been there before, also didn't help that Google directed us to Loxford Leisure Centre 😂. But after knowing the address is accurate we made it there, some later than others.

The centre had been left for a long while, and the door to get in, couldn't be opened very far due to the brambles, so we cut out way in and got scratched along the way. The initial idea was to bag the brambles in bin liners but it just shred them. So a compost idea was floated and it seemed the easiest to do, so we cut out a dedicated area and left all out cuttings there.

We finished up, and Liz bought some snacks for us to try, AJ turned up towards the end, due to navigation issues. And we promised to come back and see if we can tackle the rest of the brambles with hopefully less scratches 😅
