🎅 GoodGym Bexley’s Windy-but-Wonderful Christmas Tree Mission! 🎄

Sunday 7th December

Written by Marianna Chernobrivenko

On Sunday, a lovely team of GoodGymmers headed to Welling High Street to give the Christmas tree its festive glow — and wow, did we earn it. The wind was relentless, the kind that tries to steal your tinsel and your dignity at the same time.

But honestly? It just made the mission feel even more special. There’s something about standing in a blustery square, sharing baubles, holding branches steady for each other, and laughing when the wind tries to decorate you instead of the tree. Teamwork turned what could’ve been a battle into a brilliant, joy-filled hour.

And the magic didn’t stop there — we even had a surprise VIP drop in! Father Christmas himself swung by to check out our handiwork and officially sign off the tree. (We’re pretty sure that counts as being on the “Nice List” twice.)

Despite the weather, the tree came together beautifully — fast, too. It’s amazing what a group of kind, determined people can do when they pitch in together. Now Welling has a Christmas tree that shines a little brighter because of you.

Windy? Absolutely. Heartwarming? Completely. Festive? As ever.

Helping Welling Sparkle

Sunday 16th November

Written by Sarah W

At yesterday’s buzzing Welling Sparkle Christmas Market, we spent a merry hour with the brilliant team from Discover Welling, helping to run their retro fairground games.

Families loved the nostalgic, simple-but-fun games, and every penny raised goes towards the town's Christmas lights funded by Discover Welling.

Once the last prizes were won and the crowds drifted home, we helped pack the stall away. Then it was time to add even more sparkle to Welling by decorating the nearby flower bed that Discover Welling maintains: A herd of hand-crafted rustic reindeer, led proudly by red-nosed Rudolf and wrapped in twinkling festive lights, is now there for everyone to enjoy.

A big well done to Tamara (Tania on completing your first ever GoodGym task — fantastic to have you and your young helper with us! 🎄✨

Over the coming weeks we have a host of festive tasks on offer. We'd love to have you along!

Poppies down, spirits up!

Wednesday 12th November

Written by Sarah W

Last night we had a busy and brilliant evening celebrating Luke 's 50th good deed, welcoming Manish to his first, and doing a poignant good deed - helping Discover Welling take down the Remembrance poppies along the high street.

When we did this task last year it was a struggle cutting through the cable ties in the finger-numbing cold.

This time, thanks to the eco-friendly reusable ties we’d used to put them up, and a much milder evening, the job was far easier!

Afterwards we found a big table at the pub for a lovely social with eats, drinks, lots of chat and laughter.

As well as forgetting to take any photos during the task, it turns out that we missed a few poppies too. But Julie was in the area this morning and collected them in her highly appropriate Royal British Legion bag.

The poppies and cable ties will be safely stored away so that Welling can pay its respects again next November ❤️

Stick 'em up!

Saturday 8th November

Written by Sarah W

After finishing our donation sorting session at the Community Hospice, we headed out to make the most of the lovely morning and use up the last of Discover Welling's Welling Sparkle stickers. With the High Street already covered in our group session last Wednesday, we aimed for the busiest side streets to add a bit more festive cheer to the lamp posts.

It didn’t take long — and it was a great way to spread some Christmas spirit around town!

By the light of the silvery Moon

Wednesday 5th November

Written by Sarah W

Tonight’s task was all about spreading the word about the Welling Sparkle ✨ — the town’s festive Christmas market organised by Discover Welling — by putting up promotional stickers along the High Street to help get everyone excited about the event!

After welcoming Hannah and Paul to their very first GoodGym session, we did a quick warm-up then set off on a 1.3k chatty run to meet the rest of the gang at our first lamp post rendezvous.

With the supermoon glowing above 🌕 and the distant popping of fireworks 🎆 (it is the 5th of November, after all!), we split into two groups to cover both sides of the road. It wasn’t meant to be a race, but a little friendly competition emerged over which team could finish their side first!

Along the way, it was lovely to chat with a few curious passersby who asked about the Welling Sparkle.

Seventy-eight lamp posts later, it was mission accomplished! After a brisk walk back to Crook Log with lots of chatting, we wrapped up another fun and productive evening.

We’ll be back in Welling next week for more lamp post duty — taking down the Remembrance poppies. Hope to see you there!

Just popping out to put up poppies

Sunday 26th October

Written by Sarah W

Each November, Discover Welling put up large poppies on lamp posts along Welling high street to mark Remembrance.

We teamed up with them again this year to help get the job done. Managers from the new Puregym in Welling came along too.

There was a strong and bitter wind conspiring against us, but working as two teams covering either end of the street, and with some brisk walking, we got the forty lamp posts poppy-fied in no time!

We'll be helping take the poppies down again after Remembrance Day, so why not come along and give us a hand?
