Not just a token gesture

Saturday 16th July 2022

Written by Katherine (she/her)

2 Goodgymers supported and ran at Leamington Spa parkrun at Newbold Comyn.

Despite a warm start to the day, the turnout for Parkrun was pretty good with runners huddling in the shade as they listened to the race directors briefing. Thankfully a lot of the course was under the trees which made the heat slightly more bearable.

At the end of the run, Nigel and Katherine helped to sort the 364 runner tokens with help from sorter mastermind Trevor. It was all very organised with a dedicated table with rows drawn on for every 10 numbers make it really easy to see if there were any missing tokens. The main challenge was trying not to drip on the table after our sweaty Parkrun - yuk!

With all the tokens sorted and safely back on their holders, the job was complete.

Well done to Nigel for completing his first Parkrun at Leamington Spa and not even needing to walk up the big hill!

Doubled up in rain

Saturday 18th June 2022

Written by Katherine (she/her)

3 Goodgymers started the weekend with some Parkrun volunteering coupled with completing the 5k run that is weekly Parkrun.

Nigel and Katherine started early at Warwick Racecourse Parkrun arriving at 8:15am ready for pre-event set-up. This involved setting up the start/finish ropes, putting up various signs warning other course users of runners and providing arrows to guide runners, as well as setting out the all important turning point at the correct position so that all runners complete the correct 5km distance.

With everything sorted, runners were waiting with trepidation as the skies became darker and just as the race director started his briefing, the heavens opened so everyone took over under the big tree near the start, before admitting defeat and heading to the start line with rather soggy feet to start the event.

Meanwhile, just 4 miles down the road in Leamington, Allan was also getting rather soggy whilst waiting for and taking part in Leamington Spa Parkrun around Newbold Comyn. Allan's volunteering however took part at the end of the run as he was on post event close down, meaning he had to hang around whilst rather damp (and no doubt getting cold) at the end after multiple bouts of rain throughout the event to help with packing away all the signs and cones. Has he mastered the origami challenge of getting the Leamington Spa Parkrun sign back in the bag yet?!

Can you spot the difference between the before and after photos?!

We scan-not come up with another pun for Parkrun!

Saturday 5th February 2022

Written by Katherine (she/her)

3 Goodgymers were up bright and early on a sunny February Saturday to help at their local Parkrun in Leamington Spa. This week we had the additional task of putting up banners in support of Raceways and Marathon Kids to help promote their upcoming races in Alcester and Leamington.

It was beautifully sunny which made barcode scanning a little tricky at times with the shadows and reflections it caused but we weren't complaining! Allan managed the active double by running and then volunteering with post event take down.

Looking forward to supporting at Warwick Racecourse parkrun on 5th March :-)

Scan we do it? Yes we scan!

Saturday 4th December 2021

Written by Katherine (she/her)

Members of Warwick and Leamington Spa GoodGym were supporting at Leamington Spa parkrun this morning, braving the cold to scan runners' barcodes.

It was the first time the winter course had been used since before COVID, so runners were racking their brains to try and remember the route, but everyone managed to find their way to the finish line to have their barcodes scanned and record their time.

Looking forward to doing it all again at Warwick Racecourse Parkrun on 1st January! Sign up here
