Weeds Must

Wednesday 6th July 2022

Written by Redbridge runner

A lovely warm evening for a session in the churchyard!

We arrived by running and cycling to Leyton's churchyard where Mel met us with an offer of a cuppa and new tools to help clear the section by the Church Road.

We grabbed all the tools and heavy duty gloves and started chopping down overgrown areas around the gravestones. We definitely put the world to rights discussing the meltdown of the government, travelling, our upcoming race in Amsterdam, books we'd read and multi-tasking! Turns out some people can talk and garden at the same time!;)

An enjoyable hour to socialise whilst doing good and an a run/cycle back home. Well done everyone!

Woodchippy chappies

Another beautiful evening for a social community gardening session!

We were back at Saint Church in Leyton to continue laying down the woodchip path to make this wonderful green space accessible to more people. There are lots of greenery and woodland flowers and great trees - so good to spend an hour in this wonderful place.

On arrival we were offered a cuppa tea (always a nice way to start the task!) and then got stuck in with Clara and Mel shovelling the woodchip into wheelbarrows that Tony, Pippa and Rebecca were quickly moving to the path where Ama was raking it flat, later joined by Julia who also cleared the overgrown path from brambles and green alkonet to widen it!

A great workout and great community spirit! Well done everyone!!

What a lovely warm evening for a spot of weeding, clearing and chatting!

We met directly at the session for some needed maintenance around the church - Jamie from the church met us there and offered a cuppa! Which was lovely:)

We then cleared a couple of areas of ivy, weeds and rubbish so that the spring flowers can really shine!

It was banter-central (as usual) and such a wellbeing boost from laughter!

Great work everyone and until next week!

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood

Wednesday 30th March 2022

Written by Redbridge runner

From six corners of Waltham forest we made our way to Leyton Parish Church (also confusingly called St Mary's ( armed with our garden gloves and energy in abundance to cover a path with fresh woodchip that the church had sourced for free from the local council. Mel and James (I hope that's his name) provided tea and tools (tea before task? We will definitely be back!!) and then we set to. Some loaded the wheelbarrows, some raced it up the path and deposited it some raked it evenly along the path. We amused ourselves with tongue twisters like 'how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood' By happy chance the daylight faded to evening just as we finished and we all disappeared into the night basking in a GoodGym glow of another task well done.
