Manor Playing Fields Tiny Forests

Planting trees to improve the environment and reduce flooding

Over the winter, we have been working with local primary schools to plant several 'tiny forests' in the Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD) scheme on Manor Playing Fields. We still have over 700 trees left and we need your help to get them planted before the spring really gets going. Planting Event1: 4-6pm, Wednesday 23rd March Planting Event 2: 4-6pm, Monday 4th April All ages welcome, no previous experience needed. Dress for the weather and mud. Good footwear is a must. If the weather is truly awful, we will call it off. PLEASE NOTE: Manor Playing Fields is not the same as 'Manor Fields'. The easiest access is from the bottom of Danewood Avenue. The precise location of the planting is here: https://goo.gl/maps/xGR1atPMpGVGn6v56

Double Deed Day

Wednesday 23rd March 2022

Written by Rachel (she/her)

What a glorious spring day - I just had to be outside! First I spent a morning with Sheffield and Rotherham wildlife Trust in one of Sheffield's smallest nature reserves, Sunnybank. This morning's main task was to clear some tree cuttings that had been dumped. It looked quite pretty, covered in yellow blossom. We trimmed them and wove them into some "dead hedging" that has been created to deter people cutting through certain areas. By the time we'd finished, we managed to clear it all and had quite a substantial, yet festively colourful hedge!

After a quick outdoor swim in the sunshine and a pitstop for lunch, I headed to join the community forestry team for some tree planting. We were creating a "tiny forest" of water loving Willow, Birch and Hazel to help drink up the water that collects as the area is used "sustainable urban drainage" preventing flooding.

A full and satisfying day with lots achieved!
